‘Them Apples’ is one of the most interesting releases we’ve heard in 2021. MF Tomlinson kicks off his latest single with glittering, shimmering pop hooks that alternate between his relaxed vocal, and the quick falsetto of backing singers. Halfway through, it cuts into an atmospheric jazz breakdown and a pulsing guitar solo, before returning to his artistic pseudo-folk. It’s a mesmerising seven-minutes of music, and the colourful, sometimes juxtaposing music video matches every note perfectly. His music captures uncertainty beautifully, with the film’s director (Tomas Jef) as “hyperreality in a state of connected isolation”. Be on the lookout for more from MF Tomlinson this year. -Dan Peeke
